The Farmers Wife QAL

is starting Feb 1 over at Brynwood Needleworks and I'm ready! I've got my book, I've had it for some time. I love reading those letters from the farmers wives - makes me want to be one! But I don't have a farmer or a farm so.... I'm pretty darn happy with husband I have, even if he doesn't have a farm :) Ya'll know I'm just kidding, I have a best husband in the world. I'd live with him in a cardboard box if we had to. Just as long as we're together!

So, this is my fabric -
You might notice some Moda French General in there :) I've been carefully saving it for a special occasion and this is it! I only had that little bit and I wasn't going to use it on anything 'everyday'!

The only decision left to me, is how big to make the quilt. I'd love to have one of my quilts on our bed, but gosh, it's a king size bed!!! That's a big quilt!!! So, I'm really torn about that.

I'd love some advice about a quilt for a king size bed. I'd hate to make the pieced part queen size and then just do a really wide border to make it king size, although...that would be a nice space for some applique! LOTS of applique!!! Now I'm even more confused about what to do. Advice - please!!!

  1. Karen!
I don't know why you are asking this...you know you as well or better than I do and I KNOW that you believe anything worth doing is worth taking as long as it takes so it comes out exactly the way you want it!!!! If you really want a king size quilt for your king size bed and you have no deadline to have it finished by...then make what your heart wants.....no wide border....do it all just the way you want. Pretend you are a paying customer and make it with the same passion.
We, artists, always settle when it comes to making anything for ourselves...we blame time, priorities, work, life.....When the fact of the matter is, all these things we blame are things we have committed to for someone else and we never make or do for ourselves.
I am a great one to talk. I have a duvet cover that I am using that I made, absolutely hate, and keep telling myself I will make a quilt, but I can't seem to finish it!!! The hard part is done (the top). I know the torn feeling you have but you asked for advice so here is my advice. Now, if only I would take my own advice! Can't wait to see it....Love the colors!!! Have fun....

  2. I know what you're saying is true! I was looking for some other ideas and I got one! :) My quilting buddy Karen Bush http://rusticandlace.wordpress.com/ Took my idea of the applique on the wide borders, and said "Why don't you put the blocks as the border (maybe 3 or 4 rows on each side) and then have your applique in the middle! The more I think about that idea, the more I like it!!! It would be unique and I do love to do applique.

Are you going to quilt your own top? I always send mine out to be quilted - Much faster that way :)
